"Nevertheless, the authorities had the situation well under control," reports I.S.A.R. Germany's medical director, Thomas Laackmann. It was therefore not necessary to deploy the medical component of I.S.A.R. Germany on a larger scale.
Laackmann describes the destruction of the infrastructure as „serious“. For example, roads, schools, factories and hospitals were destroyed in the earthquake a week ago. There is a great need for action here in the near future. Together with the Ecuadorian authorities, the exploration team has therefore assessed several possible reconstruction projects. These include a destroyed sewing factory. Disabled girls worked there until the earthquake. The aim now is to help with the reconstruction and give the girls a new perspective. Planning is currently underway. Further projects are not ruled out.
