Famine in East Africa
One focus of I.S.A.R. Germany's work since 2011 has been to help the victims of the drought disaster in East Africa. Aid teams were deployed in the world's largest refugee camp in Kenya. Six tonnes of relief supplies were brought to Dadaab. The camp was home to more than 400,000 people who had fled the drought disaster in Somalia. The aid supplies were urgently needed there, as the famine in East Africa had worsened and the flow of refugees continued unabated. "Around 1,000 people are currently arriving at the Dadaab refugee camp every day," reports I.S.A.R. Head of Operations Thomas Laackmann. The conditions were "unbelievable".
The I.S.A.R. team also distributed water to refugees in the area surrounding the camp and supported the work of the hospital run by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). In particular, the aid delivery from Germany was also handed over to the hospital. In addition to medicines, this also included medical equipment for the care of women, including an ultrasound machine, a gynaecological examination couch and operating lamps. This equipment was needed in the refugee camp, as many women are pregnant and around 20 children are born every day. Numerous female refugees were also raped on the way to the camp and were in urgent need of medical care. Specialised food for completely malnourished children was also part of the aid delivery.
Contact was made with the Kenyan orphanage run by the organisation EOTOO (Each One Touch One Orphan). The I.S.A.R. Germany team were able to see for themselves that the orphans in this home are very lovingly cared for
Since then, I.S.A.R. Germany has been permanently involved in Kenya. The orphanage "EOTOO", "Each one touch one orphan", in Nairobi mainly cares for HIV and refugee orphans. The orphans receive holistic care beyond school, thanks to a mother's initiative and personal, voluntary commitment. The aim is to accompany each child until it has found a way to support itself as a young adult.
The EOTOO orphanage is financed exclusively through donations. I.S.A.R. Germany has been regularly involved here since 2013. In the past, new mattresses and shoes as well as writing and school materials for the orphans have been financed.
