The three experts are currently on their way to the town of Esmeraldas. They are to assess the possibilities for humanitarian aid in the surrounding area. "We are working in coordination with the Ecuadorian government," said I.S.A.R. President Dr Daniela Lesmeister.
Many people were affected by the earthquake at the weekend. In many regions, the infrastructure has been affected by the natural disaster. "Once we have analysed the situation, we will decide together with the government on how to proceed," said Lesmeister.
A severe earthquake shook Ecuador on Sunday night. According to the US earthquake monitoring centre USGS, it had a magnitude of 7.8 and, according to the government, several hundred people were killed.
