Our team in Mexico is always having very special experiences during its current deployment. Above all, the Mexicans' willingness to help each other, but also their gratitude towards the I.S.A.R. experts, leave a great impression. Team member Stefan Heine reports on this. Mexico City. People stand cheering and clapping on the streets of Mexico City, they are enthusiastic and grateful. The cheers are for the helpers after the earthquake disaster on 19 September 2017 - a kind of self-motivation. Thousands of Mexicans have volunteered to search for people buried in the rubble of collapsed houses. Using plastic buckets, they carry tonnes of rubble from the mountains of debris. They are all committed to saving lives. Even if, after several days, the probability of discovering any sign of life in the rubble has fallen to almost zero.
Volunteer work is an essential basis for the relief efforts following the earthquake in Mexico. Everywhere it is clear that the population is standing together. And while some are toiling away on the rubble, others are organising supplies for helpers and earthquake victims. Drinks, sweets and sandwiches are offered to the I.S.A.R. Germany team every minute. And again and again it's "Gracias! Thank you for being there! Thank you for not forgetting us! Thank you for helping us! Wherever the team goes, they are welcomed with open arms. Help is offered everywhere - accommodation, catering, interpreting services. The solidarity of the population and the unbridled willingness to help are impressive.
The Mexicans offer some support to their compatriots who have lost all their belongings. Those who have managed to escape from the collapsing houses often have nothing left but the clothes they are wearing. Others are unable to get back into their homes. Some of them are badly damaged. The danger of them collapsing is too great. Our I.S.A.R. team also encounters such fates time and again during its work.
The construction experts in Mexico City and the surrounding area have already checked the stability of around 100 buildings - from labour offices to single-family homes. The recommendation was often that the building should no longer be used in future. It is foreseeable that not everyone will comply. For example, many owners of owner-occupied flats have no insurance. For them, the loss of their home quickly means social relegation. Farmers, craftsmen and traders in the villages usually have no alternatives either. They don't have the money to build a new house. Volunteer helpers are a ray of hope. They come from the capital to distribute food, sleeping bags and blankets to the poorest of the poor.
The solidarity among the population is impressive. We have never experienced this level of commitment during our aid missions.
In the end, one conclusion remains: Mexicans, you are great! You can be proud of what you have achieved after the earthquake. Don't let this courage and unbridled optimism be taken away from you, even if nature can sometimes be very cruel. You can be sure that we will be there for you if you need us!
Ciudad de México. La gente vitorea y aplaude en las calles de la Ciudad de México; está entusiasmada y agradecida. Los vítores son para los ayudantes tras el desastre que causó el sismo del 19 de septiembre de 2017. Es una especie de automotivación. Miles de mexicanos se presentaron voluntariamente para buscar sobrevivientes en las ruinas de los edificios derrumbados. Con cubetas de plástico acarrean toneladas de escombro desde las zonas de desastre. Todos están consagrados a una única misión: la de salvar vidas humanas. Incluso si, después de varios días, la probabilidad de descubrir signos de vida entre los escombros ha descendido prácticamente a cero.
El compromiso voluntario es una base esencial de las acciones de ayuda tras el terremoto de México. On all sides, the population is united. Y mientras unos trabajan arduamente en los escombros, otros organisan la alimentación de los ayudantes y de las víctimas del temblor. Minuto a minuto se nos ofrece una bebida, un dulce o un sandwich a los miembros de la brigada I.S.A.R. Y siempre nos dicen: ¡Gracias por estar aquí! ¡Gracias por no olvidarse de nosotros! ¡Gracias por ayudarnos! Adondequiera que vaya la brigada, nos reciben con los brazos abiertos. En todos lados nos ofrecen ayuda también a nosotros - alojamiento, alimentación, servicios de traducción. El tremendo sentimiento de unidad de la población y la disposición para ayudar son de asombrar.
De esta manera, los mexicanos les ofrecen algo de apoyo a sus conciudadanos que lo perdieron todo. A quien logró escapar de los edificios colapsantes, con frecuencia no le quedó más de lo que lleva consigo. También nuestro equipo de I.S.A.R. se topa con frecuencia con destinos de este estilo.
Son alrededor de cien edificaciones cuya estabilidad ha evaluado nuestro equipo de expertos en la Ciudad de México y alrededores - desde la oficina de empleo hasta la casa particular. No son contadas las veces en las que nuestra recomendación ha sido la de no volver a habitar la construcción. It is probable that not everyone will follow this advice. Muchos propietarios no cuentan con un seguro, y la pérdida de su vivienda significa el desplome en su situación económica. Tampoco los campesinos, obreros y comerciantes de los pueblos tienen muchas alternativas. Les faltan los recursos para construir una nueva casa. En estas situaciones, los ayudantes voluntarios son una luz de esperanza. Salen de la capital para repartir víveres, sacos de dormir y cobijas entre los más pobres.
It is an example of the unity of the people of Mexico. En nuestras misiones de ayuda, nunca habíamos encontrado un compromiso similar a tan gran escala.
Por último queda la siguiente conclusión: ¡Mexicanos, son maravillosos! Pueden estar orgullosos de su desempeño tras la desgracia. No pierdan este valor y el optimismo, aun ante las atrocidades de la naturaleza. Pueden estar seguros de que estaremos para ayudarlos cuando nos necesiten.
