A special workshop kicked off today in the Philippine city of Tacloban. Around 120 representatives from the fire brigade, police and civil defence accepted I.S.A.R. Germany's invitation, including the Vice Governor of the Leyte region, Carlo Loretto.
During the three-day workshop, the extent to which I.S.A.R Germany and its partner organisation BRH Bundesverband Rettungshunde e.V. can support the expansion of disaster protection on the island of Leyte as part of a funding project from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research will be discussed. Vice Governor Loretto expressly supported the project and in his speech thanked the German aid organisation for its commitment in the Philippines and called on people to take advantage of the offer. On the first day, the organisations involved in the workshop introduced themselves in more detail and explained the current status of equipment and training.
The next two days will now be spent working out exactly what help is needed. A plan will then be drawn up for the implementation of the project. The main focus will be on setting up a disaster management system, warning the population using a radio-controlled siren and loudspeaker system, providing medical training for disaster relief workers and training rescue dogs.
