After the flood in the Ahr valley, the "Piano of Ahrweiler" was a glimmer of hope. It recently moved to the fire brigade museum in Fulda. An ISAR team had become aware of the owners of the piano during clean-up work in the streets of Ahrweiler and helped them to remove the instrument from a building that had been damaged by the flood.
The wet piano was actually supposed to be scrapped. But fortunately, the excavator that was supposed to load the piano onto a lorry was broken. And so the street in front of the house once again became a big stage for the instrument. Without further ado, it was given the words „Play me!“ and over the next few days, some passers-by responded to this invitation. The piano resounds once again and people sing. Videos and photos made headlines on social media. The THW Historical Collection and the German Fire Service Museum recognised the historical significance and brought the piano to the museum in Fulda. The instrument was officially handed over in May. To commemorate the flood disaster in 2021, the composer Kai Ferchel composed a piano sonata especially for the occasion and premièred it on the piano.
