I.S.A.R. Germany is currently monitoring the situation following the earthquake in Morocco. However, an official request for assistance from the Moroccan government is still pending, meaning that there is currently no concrete deployment option for the German aid organisation.
Nevertheless, I.S.A.R. is preparing to support the country in search and rescue operations. Our Information and Situation Centre and the logistics team have been making the necessary preparations since the morning.
The earthquake occurred on the night of 9 September in the Atlas Mountains, around 75 kilometres south of the city of Marrakech. With a magnitude of 6.8 and a depth of 18.5 kilometres, it is one of the strongest quakes to have shaken the country in North Africa in recent years. It must currently be assumed that several hundred people have been injured or killed.
