The large-scale SAREx (Search and Rescue Exercise) took place on Rügen from 25 to 28 September 2024. ISAR Germany was on site with the eleven-strong RUND group as mimes to simulate realistic rescue scenarios for the sea rescuers. Organised by the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS), the participants trained in a variety of rescue situations, including locating shipwrecked persons, providing initial medical care and transporting injured persons.
Nine DGzRS rescue units, external ships and SAR helicopters were involved in the exercise. Scenarios were only announced when the "alarm was raised" in order to make the emergency as realistic as possible. In addition, the crews practised handing over shipwrecked persons, rescue operations in confined spaces as well as search patterns and command tasks in accordance with international standards.
The DGzRS's decades of experience show that constant training is crucial in order to be prepared for an emergency. Supported by ISAR Germany, SAREx helped to further improve the cooperation and coordination of rescue teams and strengthen operational readiness on the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
