Summary
I.S.A.R. Germany takes part in international workshop on prevention and emergency measures
A comprehensive cholera training course organised by the Robert Koch Institute, Aktion Deutschland hilft and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has prepared medical professionals, volunteers and members of local organisations to deal with the infectious disease. I.S.A.R. Germany took part in the workshop, which combined theoretical knowledge with practical exercises.
The training focussed on knowledge about transmission routes, symptoms and prevention measures for cholera. The theoretical units provided basic information on the importance of hygiene and clean drinking water. In practical exercises, the participants practised recognising suspected cases, initiating emergency measures and strategies for containing the spread of the disease.
One focus was on raising awareness of hygiene measures such as regular hand washing and safe food storage. Concepts for a rapid response to a cholera outbreak were also presented. The workshop also included the establishment of a cholera centre with IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) and ORC (Oral Rehydration Centre).
Cholera is a diarrhoeal disease caused by bacteria that mainly occurs in areas with a lack of drinking water and inadequate sanitary facilities. If treated quickly, the disease is easily treatable.
